The Indian Mission to ASEAN was opened as a result of expansion of India's relations with the countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in range and depth culminating into a decision of the Indian Prime Minister and ASEAN Leaders to upgrade the relationship into a strategic partnership.  In pursuant of this, Prime Minister announced India’s decision to appoint a separate Ambassador to ASEAN at the 11th India-ASEAN Summit in Brunei on October 1, 2013. 

 

Based on the decision, H.E. Mr. Suresh K. Reddy was appointed as first resident Ambassador of Indian Mission to ASEAN and the Mission started functioning from its new Chancery premises from January, 2015 onwards. The Mission was officially inaugurated by Hon’ble External Affairs Minister, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj on April 23, 2015 in the presence of Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Le Luong Minh.  The occasion was also graced by senior representatives from Government of the Republic of Indonesia, Diplomats, Opinion Makers and the representatives of media and Indian Community.
